Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love--and face the hardest decision of his life. - Amazon.com

One of the major things about this book that bothered me was that it left me with many questions, and a kind of "What just happened?" Sort of feeling. I felt like the story wasn't as interesting as it could be, or really all that creative either. Sure it's a good story a lot of people can relate to - boyfriend/husband/friend is in the army and they worry about them constantly - but it wasn't very original. Like I said, it is a story a lot of people can relate to which is why I think it's so popular. Sparks' writing style isn't my favorite, but I did come across some key paragraphs or even pages that forced me to re-read them and think "wow, that was a really great description." You could definitely feel what John was feeling at times, which was probably his goal after all. Overall the book was a bit of a disappointment, but it was still a nice story with very relate-able characters, also carrying a theme of love and caring for one another that everyone can learn from.
